Mason Geertsen, one of the top defencemen with the Vancouver Giants, didn’t skate with the WHL team on Monday due to an upper body injury and Giants general manager Scott Bonner listed him as day-to-day after the on-ice session.

Geertsen, 18, a fourth-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in this summer’s NHL draft, was hurt in Friday’s season opener against the Victoria Royals. He did seem to finish the game, although he struggled on the night and wound up a minus-three. He skipped the second half of the home-and-home Saturday on Vancouver Island.

Vancouver hosts the Seattle Thunderbirds on Wednesday at the Pacific Coliseum. Since he didn’t skate Monday, it’s doubtful that Geertsen would be ready to play. Bonner had said Saturday that he thought then that Geertsen would miss the week.

Vancouver is home to the Everett Silvertips on Friday, and then heads out on their Eastern Conference roadtrip next week.

Right winger Luca Leone (lower body) and centre Travis McEvoy (upper body) both skipped practice Monday.

Coach Don Hay did mix up his lines Monday, as he is apt to do. Carter Popoff was skating between Tim Traber and Jackson Houck, while Alec Baer was in the middle with Cain Franson and Rob Trzonkowski on his flanks and Andi Eder had Anthony Ast and Ty Ronning for wingers. The trio of Thomas Foster and wingers Dalton Sward and Joel Hamilton stayed together.
