The Vancouver Giants got a little good news Monday. The Giants say that they have received the necessary paperwork from USA Hockey for recent signee Alec Baer, 15, to join their club.
Baer stated on his Twitter account (real_abaer): “March 1 needs to hurry. #debut.” Vancouver plays the Lethbridge Hurricanes that night and is also celebrating the 85th birthday of co-owner Gordie Howe.
Baer, a forward from Minnesota, dominated Vancouver’s rookie camp earlier this year. He had been passed over in the WHL bantam draft and added to the Giants’ 50-man protected list soon after, but that’s a hard thing to gauge since Americans are commonly looked at as NCAA bound and are routinely drafted in the late going, if at all.
Baer had come to Vancouver for a Feb. 1 game featuring the Kelowna Rockets, to check out how things worked. The Giants were hosting a Joe Sakic tribute that night and Baer got to meet the Hockeky Hall of Famer.
He didn’t miss a game with his Benilde-St. Margaret’s high school team, but he didn’t skip a practice. When he returned, his coach cut him from the roster. Minnesota, of course, is an NCAA hotbed.
Baer said earlier that he hoped to play Sunday against the Seattle Thunderbirds but his paperwork wasn’t completed. There’s no word on how many games he might play. Fifteen year olds are usually just call-ups but can play full time once their regular team finishes its season.
